Smoke With Class
How to Smoke Without Being a Dick
I have learned a great deal from my friends over the years. Wisdom you cannot go to school to get. Wisdom that cannot be bought. One such bit of wisdom is smoking etiquette. If you’re smoking some herb with your buddies, there is etiquette and methodology behind how that should take place.
- Whoever rolled or packed the blunt/joint/spliff/bowl gets to also light it and take the first puff. This is known as “Roller Rights.”
- If smoking from a bowl, you place the lighter at the edge before you draw, so that the flame doesn’t torch the entire surface of the herb in the bowl. This allows others to also get a “green hit.” This is known as “cornering the bowl.”
- Always pass to the left. That way, it is never confusing who is next in the rotation.
- The rule for blunts is “puff, puff, pass,” meaning you can hit the blunt twice before passing it to the next person. It also means that you should not hold the blunt. For example, telling a story on your turn to smoke.
- Ash, before you pass. Simple enough.
- Only “chief” if you have roller rights or have heavily contributed. “Chiefing” refers to taking large hits on your turn. The host may also chief, meaning the person whose home you’re at while smoking. In other words, only chief if you are a chief. The term comes from native american tobacco smoking, in which the Chief of the tribe was allowed to smoke the most.
- No saliva! This means make sure your lips are dry before hitting the bowl, joint, or blunt. This is especially important with blunts as the paper/leaf absorbs moisture quickly, resulting in a wet hit for whoever smokes next.
- Contribute if you can. Basically, if you want to partake, you should be able to add a little herb to the pot. If everyone does this, then nobody has to contribute very much. If you are smoking for free, make sure to puff, puff, pass without chiefing.
I didn’t smoke weed until my mid-twenties, and I quickly learned smoking etiquette because nobody wants to be “that guy.” I HATE a wet blunt… so gross. I have big lips, and I don't do that, so no excuses! I hope this helps others who smoke in groups!

I learned to smoke with people who were older so I too learned the etiquette.
One thing I'll add. If you don't have herb to add offer to contribute in some other ways so you're not a mooch. Food, drink, gas money, something.
